1.   LEAP is thrilled that Hailey DeDominicis will be in the lecture hall on Wed. Feb. 26th during senior lunch only.  She will be sharing her writing experiences, focusing primarily on her script turning into a screen play turning into a 2024 Netflix movie called “Our Little Secret”. If you are in grades 9 or 10, sign up for a free ticket to attend.  See the sign-up sheet on the door of room 1009. 

2.   Hey ACS Grads! Tomorrow, YES, Tomorrow Grad Photo Re-takes are here! Edge Imaging will be back this week, February 11th, 12th, and 13th. Please book your retake photos using the same process as before. Go to the Edge Imaging website to register for a time and show up ready with a white collared shirt! 3.   Our ACS Prefects are proud to serve you, our lions, this semester.  Today marks the official start to our FREE Homework Help, Tutoring, and Mentorship services.  If you'd like be paired with a Prefect to get some help with a class you're struggling in, or you'd like to chat with them and find out how to get more involved at our school, please go to STUDENT SERVICES to grab an application, fill it out, and return it.  Our Prefect team will review your application and begin the process of pairing you with one of our ACS Prefects. 

4.   Valentine’s day is just around the corner! Buy your special someone a carnation and hersey’s chocolate for $3. Tomorrow is the last day to purchase at the back of the caf on all three lunches. Carnations will be delivered to period 4 classes on Valentine’s day. 

5.   Hey ACS! Are you ready for it? On Thursday, February 13th – AKA Galentine’s Day – join us in the cafeteria from 5:30-8:00pm for the“In Our Assumption” Era dance. We’ll be dancing, vibing, and trading bracelets! Even if you’re not a Swiftie, come out and hang with your pals. Tickets are on sale now for $13.00 on School Cash Online and this includes pizza, popcorn, drinks, cotton candy and cookies! Friendship bracelets and other merch will be sold at the back of the Caf starting tomorrow. Stay tuned for spirit wear that will also be ready for purchase very soon. Buy your tickets now! 6.   Senior Badminton Tryouts will take place this week. Tryouts will be Tuesday and Thursday Morning at 7am. Please see Mr. Dyjack if you do not have a permission form yet.  

7.   Attention ALL Grade 9 and 10 students. You are invited by QUAKE to take part in this year’s Geography Challenge, on Tuesday, February 11th, during Period 1! The Challenge is a 50 multiple choice trivia quiz covering general knowledge of the physical and human world. The winner of the Challenge will move on to compete at the Provincial level. Sign up TODAY on the QUAKE board beside Student Services, or see Mrs. Walsh in 3024 at the end of the day.   

8.   Do you have talent such as painting, singing, acting, dancing or playing an instrument? Well then we need you to participate in “Assumption’s Got Talent”. There are prizes awarded to the top 3 finalists who perform in front of a live audience. If you have what it takes to take the Assumption Stage then submit your talent via video to nratelband@bhncdsb.ca no later than Thursday, March 6th by midnight! The adjudicators will choose the top ten to perform on Thursday, March 27th! 

9.   Attention Vocal Ensemble, tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 11th, is the LAST DAY for any newcomers to join the group. Message Ms. Ratelband or Mrs. Morissette if you cannot attend. The ensemble ends at 4pm. Those living in Caledonia – don't forget to book your taxi at the correct time!

1.   Important from Guidance-Today is the last day to sign up for a course change appointment. It will take time to get to you; please be patient and follow your current schedule so we can find you for your appointment.  As long as you sign up by today’s due date, you will be seen. 

2.   Note from the Guidance Department – There is a glitch with Brightspace/D2L causing students to see more courses than they are enrolled in. Please follow the schedule that was emailed to you – these are the courses you are responsible for. We are sorry for this glitch.  We have placed a work order to get this rectified for you.   

3.   Speak-up ACS!  LEAP invites you to honour Black History Month through poem, rap, free verse, broadside poem (which is a short poem with art or photography), spoken word, or an 
opinion piece. In the words of BLM co-founder Janaya Khan, “Privilege isn’t about what you’ve gone through; it’s about what you haven’t had to go through. And right now, we are in a time that is calling on us to learn the stories that we don’t know.” Please see Mrs. Connolly if you’re interested in sharing your voice.

5.   The Waterloo Math Contest is coming up!  All students are invited to sign up using the STEM or Math D2L pages and complete the appropriate quiz to sign up.  There will also be signup sheets at the back of the cafeteria today during all lunches.  You can also email Mr. Stec at cstec@bhncdsb.ca to enter and do not need to be enrolled in a math course to sign up.  The deadline is today, so come on out and test your mathematical ability!

11.  Attention Jack Chapter members! There will be a brief yet mandatory meeting today at 3:10 in lecture hall. Those who signed up for the Valentine’s Day stickies will be receiving the allotted amount to write and decorate. It is very important for all to attend. Please email Miss Dabrowski if you require more info! Have a mentally healthy day! 

12.  Junior Badminton players, your tryouts will be today after school from 3-4:15 and Monday at 7am.  

13.  Senior Badminton players, tryouts will begin next week. Tryouts will be Tuesday and Thursday at 7am. Please see Mr. Dyjack if you do not have a signed permission form.

2.   All online classes for semester two are full. No more students can be added to the waitlists. Please do not make a guidance appointment with your guidance counsellor to enroll in a semester two online course. 

3.   February is Black History Month and LEAP has a contest.  See flyers posted around the school and on the LEAP bulletin board and the LEAP D2L page.  See Ms. Connelly for info.  Deadline is Feb. 24th.  

4.   What could you have in common with Dr. Seuss, Weird Al Yankovic, Chevy Chase and Alicia Keys?  They were valedictorians for their graduating year in highschool. You could be the valedictorian for the class of 2025.  Application (found in Grad Info Package you received at the November meeting) and essay are due to the Main Office before 3 PM on Friday February 14th.  All other requirements are specified in that Grad package.

17.  Congratulations to the girls hockey team for finishing the regular season with a big win against BCI to solidify a buy to the semi finals.  Bri opened the scoring midway through the first period.  Shortly after, Bri found the back of the net again off a beautiful pass from Hannah.  Alyssa closed out the scoring to seal the Mustangs fate.  Kayli was solid in net when we needed her. The Lions now wait to find their semi final opponent for next Wednesdays game.  Good luck girls.

We're celebrating outstanding student writing from K through 12 in both English and French. Students are invited to submit their best fiction, poetry, plays, and nonfiction (up to 3000 words). Winners will progress through school, local unit, and provincial levels, with provincial winners featured in an anthology! Please submit 2 clean copies of each entry to Mrs. Engell in the Library by this Friday, February 7th. Happy writing, Lions!

Black History Month

Did you Know?   

1. Black History Month in Canada Was Officially Recognized in 1995. Black History Month started as "Negro History Week" in 1926, and was founded by historian Carter G. Woodson, before expanding into a full month in 1976. It highlights the contributions of Black artists, writers, musicians, and creators throughout history.  

 2.  Madam C.J. Walker was the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S., earning her fortune in the early 1900s through a successful line of hair care products for Black women. She was a pioneer in Black entrepreneurship, women's empowerment, and social activism. Her influence transformed Black beauty standards, economic independence, and civil rights in America and beyond.

3.   The library will be closed on exam days and that means so will the cell phone locker. Please make alternate arrangements to charge your cell phone.  

4.   This is a friendly reminder for those who still have overdue library books. Please return them to the basketball dropbox located just inside the library doors as soon as possible. To receive your Semester 2 textbooks, ensure all overdue books are returned. If any books are lost or damaged, please pay for them in cash. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask a librarian. Let's work together to get those overdue books back where they belong!

5.   St. Basil’s Parish is giving out information packages for those wanting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and/or become Catholic. If you would like to know more information, please contact Mr. Prior. 

6.   Valentine’s day is just around the corner! Starting the first day of semester two, buy your special someone a carnation and hersey’s chocolate for $3. Sales run Feb 3rd to Feb 11th at the back of the caf on all three lunches. Carnations will be delivered to period 4 classes on Valentine’s day. 

7.   Any student not returning to ACS for semester 2, you are encouraged to donate your uniform items to TLC. Make sure to see Mrs. Medeiros or Mrs. Bednarz to get a ballot for each item. You could win some fantastic prizes. The draw takes place at the end of semester 2. 

8.   Mrs. Cameron would like to thank the ACS Knit Club on all their hard work and love put into many projects this semester. The difference you make in lives of ordinary people does not go unnoticed. Our recent drop off at the Nova Vita was received with much appreciation. 10.  Happy Pongal, Lions!    The Ace Club is excited to share some insights about Pongal, a vibrant harvest festival celebrated in January by people of Tamil Nadu in South India, and Tamil communities worldwide!  Pongal marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the Sun’s northward journey, symbolizing new beginnings, prosperity, and gratitude for nature’s blessings.  While Pongal has roots in Hindu traditions, it is also a cultural celebration embraced by people from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. It’s a time to honor the Sun God, Surya, appreciate the hard work of farmers, and come together as a community to celebrate abundance and hope.

1.   The library will be closed on exam days and that means so will the cell phone locker. Please make alternate arrangements to charge your cell phone.  

2.   On January 23, 24, 27, and 28 the following buses will leave ACS at noon (12:00p.m.):   Routes: 18, 18A, B-725, B-730, B-733. Students that do not take one of these buses are encouraged to arrange a ride home on these days. 

3.   What could you have in common with Dr. Seuss, Weird Al Yankovic, Chevy Chase and Alicia Keys?  They were valedictorians for their graduating year. You could be the valedictorian for the class of 2025.  Application (found in Grad Info Package you received at the November meeting) and essay are due to the Main Office before 3 PM on Friday February 14th.  All other requirements are specified in that Grad package.   

4.   Attention Yearbook Club Members. There will NOT be a meeting today after school or through exams. We will start meetings again in Semester 2. Good luck on CCAs & Exams!

8.   Yoga club will meet tonight for a gentle restorative practice to capture some calm before exams! Dress in warm comfy clothes, and bring any blankets or eye pillows that you want to get cozy! 9.   Tuesday's special in the servery will be Comfort food for this cold weather.   Popcorn chicken mashed potato bowl topped with popcorn chicken, kernel corn, mozzarella cheese and gravy for $7.00.  Also available will be popcorn chicken poutine for $7.00.   Just a friendly reminder that the cafeteria servery will not be open during exams.

1.   Attention Graduates:  Your Parish Bursary Scholarship is due to Mrs. Fergus no later than the end of the school day today.  Unfortunately, she is absent today.  You can submit to the supply teacher Or to the Main Office.  The deadline does not change due to her unplanned absence.  

2.   Exciting news! The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association is proud to sponsor the Young Authors Awards once again! We're celebrating outstanding student writing from K through 12 in both English and French. Students are invited to submit their best fiction, poetry, plays, and nonfiction (up to 3000 words). Winners will progress through school, local unit, and provincial levels, with provincial winners featured in an anthology! Please submit 2 clean copies of each entry to Mrs. Engell in the Library by Friday, February 7th. Happy writing, Lions!  

3.   LEAP and CWAYC are happy to provide, to all students, the information for the yearly Public Speaking Contest sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Dundson Branch No. 461.  Check the LEAP D2L page for the rules, regulations and entry form. Rules/registration forms can also be found on the CWAYC bulletin board outside of Student Services. Two important deadlines:  Feb. 5th for the commitment to the contest and the contest itself on Feb. 19th. 

4.   Attention Prefects, thank-you for your servant leadership as you helped dozens and dozens of students through our Homework Help and Mentorship services, as well as your volunteerism when helping around the school and community through our Daily School Operations pillar.  To our students in need, thank-you for putting your faith and trust in us to help serve you.  And finally, to our staff and admin team, thank-you for your ongoing support to help us make a difference in so many lives throughout the semester.  On behalf of the ACS Prefect Program, we wish you all the best during final exams and we look forward to working alongside you next semester. 

5.   Yoga club’s first practice together will be tomorrow. If you haven’t yet had a permission form signed and returned to Mrs. Charnish-Currie, you can grab one from outside Rm 1034, or scan the QR code on the flyers by the fountains around school. Bring comfortable clothes to wear, and a yoga mat if you have one. We will have a few extras. 

6.   If you are between the ages of 15-18 and interested in a free 3 month YMCA gym membership, join the Y.E.S. Program (Youth Engagement Series) on Tuesdays from Jan 14 – Feb 11, 2025 at the downtown YMCA location from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. 7.   Le Club Français is hosting a French movie night, TOMORROW, Tuesday, January 14th in the Lecture Hall. The French film ‘THE CLIMB’ is a modern-day adventure comedy based on a true story. It tells the story of a young Senegalese- French man who sets out to climb Mount Everest to impress the woman he loves. Oh là là! The film will be viewed EN FRANÇAIS with English subtitles. Bring a friend, enjoy the show, and mangez du popcorn! Everyone is welcome to join!  

8.   Spots for the 2026 Arts New York City trip are filling up! Enroll now to save $100 off of the cost of the trip. Interested, but not sure how to enroll? See Ms. Benoit in room 2015 for more information and an info package today! 

9.   Do you love fashion?  Music?  Dance? Set design and set-up?  If so, we need you! ACS is collaborating with St. Vincent de Paul for our first ever Fashion Show!   We are looking for students interested in helping make this event epic. If you would like to help out with walking the catwalk, music, dance, promos, or anything behind the scenes come to our first meeting on Tuesday, January 14th at 3pm in the library. See Mme. 10. ACS book club meeting is today. If you missed this morning’s meeting, we will have another one after school today at 3:05pm in the Library’s Innovation lab. Both meetings are the same. Hope to see you there!
