Introduction

Welcome to the Assumption College Science Program!

Our science courses use a wide variety of hands-on activities to engage and reinforce learned concepts throughout the course. Grade 9 science covers a diverse range of scientific topics that look at real world applications in a fun, informative way. Whether it be conducting interesting chemical reactions to help understand the building blocks of matter, constructing electrical circuits to harness the power of electrical energy, creating mini ecosystems to comprehend the impact we have on planet earth, or exploring what lies beyond our planet to appreciate the wonder of the universe.

The ACS science department offers programing at the locally developed, destreamed, applied and academic levels for our junior courses; and workplace, college and university levels for our senior courses. We have some of the latest in digital sensors and equipment to provide the best inquiry-based program possible.

Since 2013, we have been proud to offer Advanced Placement courses in all three of our senior sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as pre-Advanced Placement classes at the Grade 11 levels. AP courses provide students with the opportunity challenge themselves and tackle university level curriculum in a high school setting.

In conjunction with our AP program, students who enjoy learning about science and want to extend beyond the classrooms can participate in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) extracurricular club. Students meet to learn about careers and innovations from a host of monthly guest speakers, sign up for various workshops, seminars and conferences, travel both locally and internationally, all in an effort to discover their passion and explore the world of science.

Course Descriptions

Grade 9, Science, Locally Developed SNC1L1

This course emphasizes reinforcing and strengthening science-related knowledge and skills, including scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and the relationship between science, society, and the environment, to prepare students for success in everyday life, in the workplace, and in the Science Grade 11 Workplace Preparation course. Students explore a range of topics, including science in daily life, properties of common materials, life-sustaining processes in simple and complex organisms, and electrical circuits. Students have the opportunity to extend mathematical and scientific process skills and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing, and oral language through relevant and practical science activities.

Grade 9, Science, Destreamed SNC1W1

This course enables students to develop their understanding of concepts related to biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science, and to relate science to technology, society, and the environment. Throughout the course, students will develop and refine their STEM skills as they use scientific research, scientific experimentation, and engineering design processes to investigate concepts and apply their knowledge in situations that are relevant to their lives and communities. Students will continue to develop transferable skills as they become scientifically literate global citizens.
