Modern Languages

Introduction

ACS offers courses in French as a Second Language, Extended French, Italian and Mohawk. Courses within the Modern Languages Department nurture and promote the affirmation of different nations and cultures.  Students will become effective communicators and will be encouraged to speak, write and listen honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of Gospel values.

Students will expand their ability to comprehend and speak the target language through daily conversations, interactive discussions and presentations. The importance of respecting people of diverse cultures will be emphasized. Students will also develop a variety of skills to become life-long language learners.  

Why Study Languages? 

Students immersed in a language curriculum learn to: 

  • Appreciate the value of learning a second or additional language
  • Use the language to communicate and interact in a variety of social settings
  • Make meaningful connections between themselves, what they encounter in texts, and the world around them 
  • Understand that the study of the French, Italian and or Mohawk language can help them improve their command of their first language  
  • Develop the skills for using language learning strategies effectively  
  • Gain insights into their first language and appreciate more fully the particular nature and function of language itself  
  • Understand that the study of languages helps them to become aware of connections between languages through time and around the world 
  • Appreciate the rich cultural legacy of the classical world within the modern world 
  • Take responsibility for their own learning as they work independently and in groups  
  • Appreciate and acknowledge the interconnectedness and interdependence of the global community  
  • Understand the importance of valuing language diversity and of learning another language for personal, professional, and social reasons 
  • Develop the skills that will enable them to engage in lifelong language learning and cultural exploration for personal growth and for active participation in society  

Our Course Options

Grade 9 French

A grade nine credit is required for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students may choose Grade 9 Core French  in Academic or French for Beginners. 

Students who excel in languages and may have an immersion background, may follow the Extended French pathway and work towards an Extended French certificate by completing seven courses in French by graduation.

Did you know we offer Extended French? 

The aim of the Extended French Program is to further develop students’ French knowledge and skills. Students will develop both an understanding and appreciation of francophone culture in Canada and around the world. After completing seven extended French credits throughout their high school career, students will be granted an Extended French certificate at graduation.

The Grade nine Extended French course provides opportunities for students to speak and interact in French in a variety of real-life and personally relevant contexts. Students will develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The prerequisite for the Extended French course is a minimum of 1260 hours of instruction in French or equivalent. Those choosing this course will be required to take CHV2OF/GLC2OF, Careers and Civics which is taught in French.

Italian 

All students are eligible to study Italian in grades 10, 11 and 12.  No prior knowledge is required for the Grade 10 Beginner Italian course.  Students of Italian will communicate and interact in the language with growing confidence, will engage in real-life contexts, and will develop an awareness of the multicultural and plurilingual nature of the modern world. The Italian culture is examined on a daily basis: language lessons include Italian art, music, food, faith and traditions. 

 

Course Descriptions

FSF1D – Core French Academic 

This course provides opportunities for students to communicate and interact in French with increasing independence, with a focus on familiar topics related to their daily lives. Students will develop their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing by using language learning strategies introduced in the elementary Core French program, and will apply creative and critical thinking skills in various ways. They will also enhance their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

In this course students will:

  • be provided with many opportunities to communicate and interact in French with increasing independence and confidence
  • focus on familiar topics related to their daily lives
  • enhance understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities
  • develop the skills necessary to become life-long language learners
  • be provided with the opportunity to participate in Le Club Français activities

FSF10- Core French Open

This is an introductory course for students who have little or no knowledge of French or who have not accumulated the minimum of 600 hours of elementary Core French instruction. Students will begin to understand and speak French in guided and structured interactive settings, and will develop fundamental communication skills through discussing situations and issues that are relevant to their daily lives. Throughout the course, students will develop their awareness of diverse French-speaking communities in Canada and acquire an understanding and appreciation of these communities. They will also develop a variety of skills necessary to become life-long language learners.

LNMAO1 - Mohawk/Open

This course is open to the entire student body and will allow students who have no prior Native language experience to develop and appreciation for the Mohawk language and culture, to explore and experience a unique world view, and to learn to speak a Native language. Students will use the language being studied for greetings and daily routines, become familiar with its writing and sound system, and practise basic vocabulary and phrases. Students will also use information technology during course-related activities.
