Brant United Way
ACS staff and students are proud supporters of the Brant United Way. The staff of Assumption College is challenged to support this worthwhile cause in our community through payroll deductions, and through a special draw for a $100 Keg dinner gift card. Students are encouraged to give through a $2.00 donation for special dress down days. To date, Assumption College has donated close to $10, 000 in the last few years. On their website, United Way Brant states: "Approximately 45, 000 citizens or 1 in 3 will be helped by our 18 Member Agencies who deliver quality services and programs for citizens in our community."
Environmental Clean Up:
We have on 9 different occasions been involved in a full day waste clean up either along the Grand River or in the west Brant area.
Fair Trade Sale
Fair Trade Sale helps workers in the developing world get paid a living wage for their efforts.
Habitat for Humanity
ACS students helped build a home for one of our lions. The home was wheelchair accessible and students worked long and hard hours to finish the home.
Relay for Life:
The Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life is a 12-hour, overnight event that involves teams of 10 taking turns walking around the track, raising thousands of dollars to fight cancer and to help families coping with this disease. Relay for life is a meaningful way for high school students, teachers, and staff to show family and friends affected by cancer that, together, we have the power to make a difference. The event is also filled with hope as it gives our community an opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors and honours the memory of those who have been touched by the disease. This even started for us in 2002. On May 31st, 2019 we celebrated our tenth Relay for Life. We have as a group raised over $600, 000 for the cause. Our next event will take place in the spring of 2021
St Vincent de Paul
Assumption College supports out local Brant chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) and we have dedicated many fundraising and awareness efforts to them including casual dress days, food, clothing and houseware campaigns, and classroom initiatives. Over the past several years we have held an annual "We Scare Hunger" campaign where our staff and students gather food donations for SSVP and local food bank. A donation bin is prominently located in our cafeteria and we regularly send the donated clothing and household items to the SSVP Thrift Store. Our on-going partnership with SSVP allows us to send groups of students and staff to participate in service days where we work alongside the Thrift Store volunteers. We have sorted food and clothing, painted walls and made minor repairs to the previous building and assisted with the opening of the new Thrift Store on Wellington St. Every two years Assumption holds an overnight event to support SSVP and their "Bed for Every Child Campaign" which is a program we initiated. Over 100 staff members and students give up their bed for a night and sleep on the floor of the cafeteria and library in solidarity with those in our community without beds. This first event alone raised $10, 000. To date over two hundred and fifty new beds have been donated to local families in need.
30 Hour Famine and Thinkfast
30 Hour Famine and Thinkfast which raised over $15000 for Development and Peace.
Tree Planting
We have been working with the Brant Tree Coalition for the past 4 years along with community members and other schools to plant over 50 000 new trees in the Abbott Court Area, just off garden ave. We have also worked with them of several other projects prior to and have also been applying for grants through Union Gas to plant trees on the Assumption College property. Vow of Silence
Acting as a voice for the voiceless, calling public attention to a number of justice issues in the third world, run by the Social Justice and Equity Class.
We Day
ACS Students attended WE day in Toronto on Thursday September 20, 2019 with Ms. Macdonald. WE day is a celebration of youth for making a difference in their local and global communities. These ambassadors lend their time and talent to empower youth around the world and we were lucky enough to learn from Craig Kielburger himself! The highlight was the arkells and host Joe Jonas.
We Scare Hunger Campaign
Thousands of pounds of canned foods are collected, generously by students at ACS on Halloween Evening, which is then donated to the less fortunate in our community.
