CWAYC at the Human Rights and Development in Africa Conference – Laurier Brantford

On Wednesday, October 12th, 15 members of Assumption’s newest enrichment group, C.W.A.Y.C.  (Canadian and World Affairs Youth Council), attended the Human Rights and Development in Africa Conference held at Laurier Brantford Campus.    Keynote speaker, Elizabeth Baisley, a PhD.  Candidate at Princeton University, presented her research on the impacts of the growing political and legislative human rights restrictions on marginalized groups in African states.    ACS students were then invited to contribute their points of view in breakout sessions with Laurier students on the most important rights for children in Canada and Ghana, Africa.   A campus tour was followed by lunch provided by Laurier.   After lunch, a question and debrief session was led by Dr. Andrew Robinson, a political science professor at Laurier. The second keynote speaker Kimalee Phillip, from the Association for Women’s Rights in Development presented her research on development practices and rethinking the role of women in development around the world.     Almost 200 students from Brantford and Southwest Ontario attended the conference, and C.W.A.Y.C members hope to attend again next year.
