Assumption’s Good Samaritan
The community at Assumption College School has benefited beyond measure from the help of its volunteers. However, few have shown the devotion and compassion than that of Kent Dixon.
Dixon, a graduate from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a designated Chartered Accountant, has managed to balance a successful professional career and his self-assigned duties as a volunteer at Assumption College. With a multitude of achievements in his past professional ventures he was able to establish Reciprocal Opportunities Incorporated in 1997—a private mortgage lending firm.
His repertoire of assistance to Assumption College School is expansive. He is present year-round in various programs throughout the school.
Dixon is held in high esteem amongst the faculty as well as the student body. In addition to his countless other contributions to Assumption College, Kent and his family have set up the Mark G. Dixon Memorial Award in honour of his brother who was the victim of a tragic industrial accident when he was in high school. The award promotes and rewards well-rounded students as the requirements are in fact the traits that Kent Dixon embodies—academics, athletics and community involvement.
Beginning each year is a new football season and for Kent Dixon that means another season of orchestrating both the senior and junior football teams. This involves distributing equipment and collecting participation forms and money.
Kent’s roots in Assumption football run far deeper than the mere organization each year. He had a direct hand in the conception of the program in 2000 working in conjunction with Rob Campbell, the school’s vice principal at the time, to give rise to the team. It was a notable achievement as Dixon had persisted for the two years previous to push for Lions Football to become a reality.
Exactly six years later Kent persevered once more, establishing the Assumption Junior football team. With an equivalent amount of effort required for the junior team to be launched, it was not an easy feat. This accomplishment not only benefited the younger students as an opportunity to learn the game, it would prove to be advantageous to senior football as it laid the groundwork and basic skills required for future success of the senior team. He has also been responsible for recruiting coaching talent to these football teams. Kent has secured many Brantford Bison coaches as well as former Saint John’s College assistant coach and now senior head coach—Kelly Ireland.
His drive for the formation of the football program was fuelled by his children, as are many of his volunteer coaching initiatives. Kent has coached an assortment of sports on top of football, including basketball and soccer. “It’s easy when you’re passionate about it,” Dixon explains.
However, it is evident Kent’s passions extend further than his sporting commitments. In 2001 Kent served on the Steering Committee for the school board’s undertaking of the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home. The home was the first ever student-built Habitat dwelling. Mr. Dixon was one of two corporate financial sponsors of the initiative and a key factor in the home’s success.
Kent is perhaps best known for his support of another aid program. Each year he assists Assumption, St. John’s and Holy Trinity with their annual Mission Trip—a board-wide venture dedicated to the re-building of communities devastated by natural disasters.
In the past ten years Kent has chaperoned for nine trips and continues to sustain the program each year by providing it with adequate funding. “The world would be a better place with more people like Kent, who gives his time unselfishly and shares his good fortune to help others,” says Dante Dalia, the mission trip coordinator.
