COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
WINDOW TO THE WORLD OF WORK

The cooperative education program at Assumption College allows senior students to apply and refine, in a supervised work placement, skills and knowledge gained in the classroom. This form of experiential learning allows students to discover more about a career of their interest by providing students with the opportunity to work with professionals in that field.

Students enrolled in the program at Assumption College reflect the diversity of vocational interests among the student body. Some of the more popular placements include elementary schools, where students hoping to pursue a career in the field of education work with a classroom teacher in the delivery of curriculum. Placements in the healthcare field are also very popular. Many students complete their semester working in different areas of the hospital or one of the many nursing homes in Brantford. Other popular placements include accounting firms, law offices and computer-related venues.

Some of the more interesting placements pursued by Assumption students this past semester included Brantford Police Services, the Sanderson Centre, the Brantford Flying Club and a local architecture firm. This semester, ACS has students working for Rogers Cable, the Brantford Fire Department and the Grand River Conservation Authority at Apps Mill.

Alumni of the program repeatedly comment on the many benefits gained by their cooperative education experience. Sarah Babinetz completed a placement at the John Noble Home last semester. When asked to reflect on the experience she noted that “it was a very positive experience. I believe I am here to help people and it is something I have found I really enjoy. I learned many valuable things, especially transferable skills which I can apply wherever I may work next.” Kyle Bryden completed a placement in the Communications Technology department at Assumption College. He also believes the experience will serve him in his future career: “This coop placement has been very beneficial in preparing me for the field of work I wish to get into, as I want to be a director of film and/or television. This coop was perfectly geared to my needs and improved on my existing skills and gave me new skills that I am going to need in the years ahead.”

Not all graduates of the program come away with such conviction. For some, the experience teaches them that a future in that particular job is something they definitely do not want. This too, demonstrates the value of the cooperative education experience, as students learn, before it is too late, that they are not interested in a career in that particular field.

In cooperative education, a student’s high school experience is enriched by practical application of classroom learning. It provides opportunities to gain relevant employment skills and realistic expectations of the work force before graduation. No wonder so many of our students pursue this valuable educational experience.
