Mission Trip 2006
Grand Isle, Louisiana
On January 20, 2006, 20 students from Assumption College, Holy Trinity and St. John’s College embarked on a mission trip to Grand Isle, Louisiana to help clean up after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
On our second day we set out to New Orleans to get a feel for the Cajun lifestyle. After touring the city we set out to the area that had the greatest devastation due to the hurricanes. What we saw next was truly an eye opener.
When asked for his reaction to the devastation, Malcolm Bailey a grade 11 student from Holy Trinity replied, “It was like a bomb hit it. I never knew how bad it was, until I saw it. It also made me feel like what I was doing was so small but then I realized that small things piled up gets things done.”
After looking at all the debris and devastation a new sense of hope came over the group. We now had a new reason to work harder then we had ever worked before. We knew then why we came to Louisiana. From Monday to Friday we worked, as long as 9 hour days starting work as early as 6 am. The group of 30 was split into two different groups, beach team and the recreational team. Each teams jobs were devoted to the islands number one source of income, tourism.
On our second last day of work we were visited by many of the community high council men and the mayor who wanted to thank us for our efforts and share their stories of the hurricanes.
The endurance and hope shown by these people was unbelievable. They all were just happy they still had their health and families. On our final day we received a tearful send off from all those that we helped. We all left Louisiana with a new sense of life and experiences that will last a life time.
When asked how she felt the community treated the group, Emilie Godin a grade 11 student at St. John’s replied, “I think the community was very generous. We were there to help them clean up their community and they were giving us a lot too. They fed us very well and even gave us unexpected gifts like Mardi Gras beads, and back packs with tons of souvenirs in it. They made us feel right at home.”
The experiences shared on this mission trip will never be forgotten by students or chaperones and neither will the people who we helped. I would like to personally thank Mr. Dalia for putting this trip together, thank you and God bless.
